Before you rush into becoming vegan. Make sure you do your research first. There are different types of levels of veganism, which I did not know of when going vegan. There are some vegans that cut out all animal food products. While others choose to avoid all animal products including clothes made form leather and wool and even toiletries.

That’s why changing your diet to plant-based can be overwhelming, but overtime it can become much easier. If you’re interested in going vegan and trying out a plant-based diet for yourself – here are 5 things I wish I knew before going vegan.

1. You need a B12 and iron supplement

The B12 vitamin is found only in animal based foods such as red meat. The B12 vitamin is in charge of maintaining your blood and nerve cells. Going vegan, you’ll need to get a B12 supplement because you’ll be cutting out meat from your diet. If you are not getting enough B12 vitamins for your body, you will experience side effects which include feeling weak, getting headaches and constantly feeling tired. Red meat is also a major source of iron. If you suffer from anemia make sure you’re taking an iron supplement. Apples are a great source of iron, so make sure you’re eating an apple a day!

2. You need to find ways to get protein

Red meat is also rich in protein and your body needs protein every day to break down amino acids which ensure proper cell repair and growth. There are many vegan options that contain high amounts of protein. Make sure you’re eating beans, quinoa and lentils every day. You can also find protein in your greens such as spinach and broccoli. Sweet potatoes and normal potatoes are high in protein and are my absolute favorite.

3. You don’t have to make the switch at once

Thinking you have to transition overnight is a lie. You can make the change at your own pace. Going vegan is a huge change especially if you consume meat and dairy products every day. Making the transition overnight could be a shock to your body and you probably won’t stick to your diet. Research shows that those that transition into veganism are more likely to stick to it. Gradually cut out meat and dairy products from your diet. If it takes weeks or even months, that's totally fine. You shouldn't feel pressured to make big changes overnight.

4. You should read every label

When becoming vegan, you will need to read food labels on everything. You will also need to become familiar with vegan ingredients and be able to identify ingredients that come from animals. There are ingredients that look vegan-friendly but they actually come from animals. Through research I’ve found that whey is actually an animal product. That lactose free does not mean diary-free. If you are unsure of any ingredient, you can always just do some research to find out more.

5. A lot of your snacks are vegan

You think that when you go vegan, you won’t be able to have your favorite snacks anymore but I’m here to tell you that’s not true. There are many chip and sweet brands that are vegan which include Oreo's Fritos, Lays, skittles and so much more. Just remember even though it vegan it’s not healthy.
