Becoming a vegan can be daunting if you don’t know how to go about it. In the beginning, it was really difficult to adjust to a new diet. But the good news is, it does get easier. I’m going to be talking about how to become vegan and share my tips that have been helping me through my vegan journey. I definitely recommend these tips to help make your transition easier.

1. Do it With Someone

Going vegan was a huge change for me – even if it was only for 21 days. Having someone do it with you, encourages you to stick with it and keeps you accountable for your actions. I convinced my family to do it with me. This makes the journey so much easier and a lot more fun! They keep me motivated and we get to learn together about being vegan.

2. Focus on Your Why

Going vegan has been hard at times. Especially if you a newbie. That’s why it’s so important to really focus and embrace all your reasons for going vegan. This is a great way to keep you motivated to stick to your diet. You could be doing it because you’re passionate about the environment, or doing it because of the animals or your health. There are so many reasons, so focus on yours and you’ll soon notice being vegan will become a whole lot easier.

3. Create an easy Meal Plan

It’s so important to plan your meals for the week ahead. It saves you time and effort, and this way you know you getting all the nutrients and vitamins your body needs to function. Being a beginner vegan takes effort, but if you don’t plan and prepare your meals before the time, you will end up eating anything and everything. If you’re a student like me and university becomes your life, you have to make sure you have breakfast and lunch sorted. Overnight oats or a smoothie always works and a chickpea salad has kept me going through the afternoons.

4. Go at your Own Pace

Everyone is different and some people need to ease into becoming vegan while others transition overnight. I personally just became vegan overnight and even though it was difficult, I slowly adjusted. If you want you can ease into it and first stop eating meat, then stop eating poultry and fish and then slowly stop eating diary. It’s entirely up to you and there is no wrong or right way to becoming vegan.

5. Don’t Forget your Snacks

If you don’t have healthy snacks around you or in your bag, you will go hungry! Your body is adjusting to a new diet, so it is normal. Carry a variety of vegan snacks – nuts, fruit or even raw veggies with you. This will prevent you from eating anything and going hungry.

6. You have to Supplement your Diet with Vitamin B12

Everyone will recommend that you get yourself a vitamin B12. It’s a very important vitamin. It naturally occurs in animal products, so with a vegan diet you have to make sure that you get enough of this vital vitamin. Otherwise you will be left feeling extremely tired and groggy. It honestly makes a difference and I take mine every morning after breakfast.

7. Go on Pinterest

Pinterest is honestly the best ever. It has everything you need to know about going and being vegan. I have found some of the best blog posts about going vegan and have learned so much already. You will also find tons of easy vegan recipes for beginners that will help you create an easy meal plan.

8. Read Labels

I have never in my life had to read labels before but since going vegan I had to make sure that all my foods didn’t contain animal products. I got into the habit of reading everything that I buy. If something doesn’t say “vegan” on the label, you have to make sure you check the ingredients. I learned that lactose-free does not mean diary-free! I also found out that cholesterol is only found in animal products, so if there is cholesterol then it is not vegan.

9. Eat Avocados

You can eat them every day. On everything. It is packed with nutrients and doesn’t leave you hungry ten minutes after you just ate. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy avocado toast?
