Why I'm going Vegan

Gosh, let me just say I’ve been planning to try this vegan challenge for over a year now. My friends are probably so tired of hearing me say, “that’s it I’m going vegan” then two days later I’m eating meat again.
I thought “why not end the year off right by feeling good and healthy”.
I thought documenting my experiences would actually motivate me to follow through for 21 days and this time go #VEGAN. You may ask, but why go vegan now? Well my body has been feeling rather drained and I haven’t been the best at looking after my body this year with the stress of doing my degree. I thought “why not end the year off right by feeling good and healthy”. This is just one of the many reasons why I am going vegan.
Here are five other reasons why I’m doing the 21-day vegan challenge:
Becoming a healthier and happier me
A plant-based diet is great for your health. No, really it is! Going on an all plant-based diet seems to have an abundance of benefits for your body. It’s a diet that’s rich in protein, iron, calcium and many other important vitamins and nutrients and full of antioxidants. I have read numerous articles on how going vegan will change your life and many have said that a plant based diet helps fight chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. All that nasty things in the meat can slow you down and make you sick with cholesterol and saturated animal fat. Bonus – my energy will increase and I will get that glowing skin I’ve always dreamed of without the use of my highlighter!
Saving the planet one carrot at a time
"Animal agriculture is the third-largest contributor to greenhouse emissions".
Okay so I won’t literally be saving the planet one carrot at a time but it is said that animal agriculture is the third-largest contributor to greenhouse emissions. This is after electricity production and household heating. Wait WHAT! That is insane. According to the United Nations, vegan diets would mean that there would be more food available to more people than an animal-based diet. I read somewhere that if the world switched to plant-based food by 2050, 8.1 million lives would be saved every year! Also 1 trillion would be saved every year in healthcare costs – maybe that’s why the healthcare system is hesitant on raising awareness around the benefits of going vegan because they will lose out on costs.
Best way to help animals and reduce cruelty
Let’s face it – the condition in which these animals live in is appalling. It’s dirty and all-round sickening that these animals spend their last days cramped up, infected and beaten before they die an inhumane death. I’ve watched way too many videos and documentaries of what really goes on behind closed doors in the farm factories. Yes, I know I should stop watching these videos and stop being overly dramatic but I have a pet animal and the thought of her being beaten, electrocuted and tortured just to be eaten is sickening. Yes, it’s not the same but cows, lambs and chickens are considered as pets to many people. I know billions of people will still carry on eating meat (and that’s okay) but I’d still like to think I’m making a difference.
Beyonce went Vegan
Need I say more. I mean, if Beyonce is vegan then we should all be vegan. Kidding! But seriously though, all the cool kids are going vegan and if they can do it, so can I and you. Yes, YOU!
Vegan food is really delicious
So, at first I was really worried and hesitant about going vegan, that’s why it took me almost a year to finally do it. I had to give up MCchicken burgers, ice-cream, crumbed chicken and the list goes on BUT after a lot of research I’ve found so many scrumptious wholesome meals that I’m so excited to try out. Also, there are so many new vegan options, meat and dairy substitutes and restaurants that accommodate vegans - I won’t feel restricted at all.
Stay tuned for juicy vegan updates and how you can become a veganlicious too!
